1.    About Cookies

A Cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie, or browser cookie, is a piece of data stored by a website within a browser, and then subsequently sent back to the same website by the browser. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember things that a browser/user had done there in the past, which can include having clicked particular buttons, logging in, having read pages on that site, usage statistics for a given site and compiling long-term records of browsers/users histories.

Web domains are only able to access cookies stored/set by that web domain, meaning that only Espresso Coding servers can access the cookies set by this domain.

2.   How does Espresso Coding use cookies?

Information supplied by cookies can help us to analyse the profile of our visitors and help us to provide you with a better user experience.

A visit to a page on Espresso Coding may generate the following types of cookie:

  • Session cookies
  • Google Analytics' cookies
  • Advertising cookies

Session cookies
Session Cookies are used to store information about user page activities so users can easily pick up where they left off on the server's pages. By default, web pages really don't have any 'memory'. Cookies tell the server what pages to show the user so the user doesn't have to remember or start navigating the site all over again. Cookies act as a sort of "bookmark" within the site. Similarly, cookies can store ordering information needed to make shopping carts work instead of forcing the user to remember all the items the user put in the shopping cart.

Google Analytics' cookies
Every time a user visits our website, Google Analytics generates anonymous analytics cookies. These cookies can tell us whether or not you've visited the site before. Your browser will tell us if you have these cookies, and if you don't, we generate new ones. This allows us to track how many individual unique users we have, and how often they visit the site.

Advertising cookies
We also use cookies to assist in targeted advertising. We use cookies set by Espresso Coding to more accurately target advertising to you, to show, for example, adverts about our product and its features. These cookies are anonymous. If you receive one of those cookies, we may then use it to identify you as having visited our site if you later visit other sites that are part of the Google advertising network, and will serve targeted advertising based on this information.

3.    How to control and delete cookies

Espresso Coding will not use cookies to collect personally identifiable information about you. However, you may wish to control what cookies are set, stop them being used by this website or delete them altogether. All modern browsers allow users to change the cookie settings, which typically can be found in the 'preferences' or options menu of your browser.

To help you better understand these settings, we have provided links to enable you to look as these settings for some of the more common browsers below;

For information on how to do this on the browser of your mobile phone you will need to refer to your handset manual.

Please be aware that restricting or preventing cookies being used may impact on the functionality of the Espresso Coding website.

4.    Cookies on espressocoding.co.uk

Name Description/purpose
JSESSIONID This Cookie uses only anonymous, non-personally identifiable information to serve dynamic advertisements based on the website page you have visited. It is a remarketing tag using a piece of JavaScript code. This remarketing tag sets and reads the cookie. When a user visits a page on the site that contains a remarketing tag, Google places a cookie on that visitor's computer and adds the cookie to a remarketing list, stored in a database on Google's servers, which store all the cookie IDs associated with each list.
JSESSION Stores an identifier which associates the user with their login information, if provided. Expires when the browser is closed.
sentUserStats This cookie is set on the users browser if a test for internet connectivity has been carried out. It is also set when the user's browser statistics have been sent back.
ESPR_BASE_URL_COLLECTED A yes value is set to indicate that the base url has been collected.
mediaplayer  For debugging; stores the method of video playback to use instead of the automatically-configured method. Not set unless explicitly invoked via special URL arguments. Expires after 7 days.

5.    Third Party Google Analytics Cookies used by espressocoding.co.uk

Name Description/purpose
__utma This cookie is typically written to the browser upon the first visit to this site. If the cookie has been deleted by the browser operator, and the browser subsequently visits this site, a new __utma cookie is written with a different unique ID. This cookie is used to determine unique visitors to this site and it is updated with each page view. Additionally, this cookie is provided with a unique ID that Google Analytics uses to ensure both the validity and accessibility of the cookie as an extra security measure.  This cookie usually has an expiry date set to two years from first visit.
__utmb This cookie is used to establish and continue a user session with this site. When a user views a page on this site, the Google Analytics code attempts to update this cookie. If it does not find the cookie, a new one is written and a new session is established. This cookie expires when a user pauses on a page on the site for longer than 30 minutes.
__utmc [and _utmb]  The B and C cookies are brothers, working together to calculate how long a visit takes. __utmb takes a timestamp of the exact moment in time when a visitor enters this site, while __utmc takes a timestamp of the exact moment in time when a visitor leaves a site. __utmb expires at the end of the session. __utmc waits 30 minutes, and then it expires.
__utmz This cookie stores the type of referral used by a visitor to reach this site, whether via a direct method, a referring link, a website search, or a campaign such as an ad or an email link. It is used to calculate search engine traffic, ad campaigns and page navigation within this site. The cookie is updated with each page view to this site.
